Professional Experience
Artist & Art Therapist
Elizabeth is an artist and art therapist currently working as an independent contractor in the metropolitan DC area. She has provided art therapy to diverse populations suffering from a wide variety of mental health issues. She has extensive experience working with older adults in both independent and assisted living facilities, addressing key issues of dementia (Alzheimer’s Disease), depression, and age-related transitions. She is currently working with homebound individuals of all ages. A primary focus now for Elizabeth is researching how art therapy can help empower homebound adolescents suffering from postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), a form of dysautonomia.
Children's National Medical Center
In her internship at CNMC, Elizabeth functioned as a member of multi-disciplinary treatment team, providing art therapy services to patients in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Units. She created a pilot art therapy program that focused on the special needs of children in the foster care system, including issues of trauma and loss. She led large, inclusive art therapy groups with complex mental diagnoses and ranging widely in age, developmental levels and cognitive functioning.
Capitol Hospice
As a volunteer summer grief camp counselor, Elizabeth designed and implemented art therapy interventions focusing on loss and resiliency for adults and children suffering from grief related to the loss of a family member.
Sunrise On Connecticut
Serving as an art therapy intern, Elizabeth created and led group and individual art therapy sessions for geriatric population in an assisted living facility, addressing complex issues such as loss, depression and dementia. She administered mental health assessments and created art therapy directives for inclusive groups with wide-ranging cognitive abilities.
The Hirshhorn Museum
As a special projects intern, Elizabeth co-created a pilot program to introduce art therapy to student groups. She led school tours throughout the museum, highlighting and discussing works with strong, emotionally evocative content. She designed and implemented art therapy interventions to address students' emotional responses to the art viewed.
