What Is Art Therapy?
They say the sum is greater than its parts. By combining the fields of art and psychology, art therapy has the power to provide clients with a unique, non-verbal way of communicating their innermost feelings. Art therapists go through years of rigorous professional training in theory and practice to learn how to assist and accompany clients on their journey to self-awareness and healing. Under the guidance of an art therapist, the mere act of making art can be therapeutically healing. At other times, it can also serve as a springboard for psychotherapeutic dialogue by bringing deeply buried issues into consciousness through the creation and interpretation of the client's images. Clients do not need to possess any artistic skills or special art training to participate in art therapy sessions. Through the use of thoughtfully chosen art materials, clients find a unique avenue to express and explore those issues that have been keeping them from enjoying a healthy and satisfying life. |
